Jassy Dean Trust - Spring is in the air and so is our new book!

Well it's certainly been a blustery 24 hours! Amazing what a few hours of sunshine can do…a couple of hours in the garden last week, the hint of summer around the corner and a bit of focus on the calm peace of our beautiful island offered a tiny respite from the heartbreaking news relentlessly bombarding us from the other side of the world. It was all too brief…but enough to re-centre on the positive and celebrate a couple of really good pieces of local news!

First up...the book!

Our new book Food From Jassy's Gardens is ‘done & dusted' and will arrive on Waiheke this week. A follow up from our 2021 sellout fundraiser Lunch in Jassy's Gardens it features eight of the wonderful gardens that many of you visited in the 2022 Garden Festival, plus one extra. There are stories about those generous and dedicated gardeners and a new range of delicious recipes inspired by the fruit and vegetables they grow. The original team is back on board. The book is written by Annie Porter, stunningly designed by Sophie Douglas and beautifully photographed by Joan Caulfield and Don Robertson.

It's glossy and gorgeous and will be a welcome addition to many a household. We have printed 1000 copies which will sell for $50 each. A little more than the previous book, but it’s bigger and printing costs have climbed upwards, like everything else. All publication costs have been sponsored by our community, and here’s a big THANKYOU to all who donated so generously including, Allpress Olive Groves, Aotearoa Insurance, Ian Douglas, Ecozip Adventures, Fullers 360, Gulf News, Island Eyes, Oneroa Dental Surgery, Man O’War Vineyard, PlaceMakers Waiheke, Colin Ritchie & Cathy Jupp-Cambell, Sealink and The Heke. We really appreciate your willingness to help.

Please do support us. This is the Jassy Dean Trust’s major fundraising thrust for 2023. The book would make ‘the’ perfect Christmas gift…or buy it as a present for yourself…and spread the word to all your friends. The last book sold out in a few short weeks. A SOLD print run translates into $50,000.00 to be shared within our Waiheke community. That goes a long way towards helping families with children facing illness or physical and emotional trauma. Every book we sell makes a difference and the number of requests for assistance grows larger every year.

From 13 November you can buy the book online at jassydeantrust.org or at the following selected Waiheke outlets:

Central Landscapes, Community Art Gallery, Palm Beach Store, Paper Plus, The Island Grocer, True Blue, Village Butchery, Waiheke Specialty Foods and the Waiheke Wine Centre.

Shipping costs are:

New Zealand: $12 for 1-2 books, or $20 for 3-4 books.

For orders over 4 books additional shipping costs may apply, please contact us on info@jassydeantrust.org to arrange shipping.

And then....Ngaio Lewis!
In further ‘good news’ we’d also like to celebrate the recognition of a very special Waiheke Islander. Ngaio Lewis was awarded a Queens Service Medal earlier this year in the first Kings Birthday Honours. In September she was presented with her honour by the Governor-General Dame Cindy Kiro. Ngaio works tirelessly for the Jassy Dean Trust, raising thousands of dollars through the propagation and sale of plants from her gorgeous garden at 403 Seaview Road. A wonderful range of exotics and natives are available from her garden 52 weeks of the year. It would be impossible to count how many Waiheke children have been helped through Ngaio’s efforts alone. Congratulations Ngaio, we are so proud of you.

Look out for our reminder email on 13 November when the books go on sale. Enjoy the book and hopefully more sunshine.

Until then, keep warm and dry,

Ngā mihi
