September 2025 update

Kia Ora & Welcome,

It’s perfect timing! Superb and very special bromeliads are arriving weekly for sale at Ngaio’s Plant Nursery. Exotic, colourful and PRICKLE FREE this new variety has been developed for New Zealand conditions. These plants have been bred for their magnificent architectural forms, patterned foliage, and unusual colours.

A specialist bromeliad breeder has generously donated them…they will not last. Contact Ngaio on 09 3727116 and arrange to visit her garden at 403 Seaview Road. As with all sales from Ngaio’s Jassy Dean Plant Nursery, the proceeds go to the Jassy Dean Trust.

JASSY DEAN CALENDAR FOR SALE

Huge thanks must go to Vicki Jayne whose superb photos of birds taken in local gardens grace a new Jassy Dean Calendar for 2026. The images are gorgeous and the format practical, with plenty of space to mark one’s comings and goings! Also, it’s extremely reasonable…$20.

Available to purchase at True Blue (wonderful Jassy Dean supporters) in Ostend, at the Rocky Bay Hall during the legendary weekend morning teas, and soon at the Saturday Market in Ostend. All proceeds go to the Jassy Dean Trust. Thank you, Vicki!

JASSY DEAN FUNDRAISING SUNDAY

This year we are concentrating our efforts to a single day.

SUNDAY 9th NOVEMBER at the SURFDALE HALL.

We will have Christmas covered. Central to proceedings a bumper plant sale grounded by the magnificent plants Ngaio Lewis grows for us all year. Chosen for their ability to suit and survive Waiheke’s particular soil and weather conditions these beautifully established sub-tropical plants are always a winner. These will include some of the above-mentioned Bromeliads … if there are any left. Offering variety and padding out these horticultural offerings will be plants especially grown and generously donated to us by the WAIHEKE GARDEN CLUB plus a selection from many of our former festival gardeners. Some of them are absolute treasures and often not to be found in plant nurseries.

There will be a magnificent raffle of garden supplies and equipment, thanks again to PLACEMAKERS, who support us so generously every year. Tickets will go on sale well before the event, outside Placemakers and at the Saturday market.  There will also be music and craft and art and tea and scones…and STALLS…and more!

STALLS: Please scratch around in your cupboards and bookcases … we NEED…

BOOKS: Already in hand are some excellent second-hand garden books, unused cookbooks and several gorgeous coffee table books in ‘as new’ condition. We are sticking to these three categories. IF YOU HAVE ANY PLEASE CONTACT US.

WHITE ELEPHANT/TIMELESS TREASURES: We have the nucleus of a marvellous ‘timeless treasure/white elephant’ table with a ‘collection’ of teapots and a selection of china tableware and contemporary ceramics…all from one generous supporter who has been busy ‘down-sizing’!   Please keep us in mind if you are doing the same…or moving… or just clearing out the cupboards. We are not looking for furniture but maybe that beautiful cup and saucer that you inherited from Aunty Josephine. Your daughter doesn’t want it but someone else’s daughter would treasure it!  If you have something you think is rather special and would like to donate…we can arrange collection.

BAKING: We will be serving morning and afternoon tea…and we are going to need lots of baking.

TO ALL OUR VOLUNTEERS - HELP IS NEEDED!

We need volunteers to man the stalls, help in the overall organisation, do some baking,  maybe raise some vegetable seedlings,  or collect and deliver etc. Do put your hand up if you can help…or contribute with a treasure or two…AND DO PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD!

FOR ANY OF THE ABOVE – CONTACT -  JUDE 02102488377 -  SALLY 021441031 - ANNIE 021550049.

All this fundraising can get a bit tedious and time consuming but it all becomes worthwhile when we see the results! Of particular satisfaction has been a recent report from a Jassy Dean Trust funded programme at Te Huruhi School. Here, educational psychologist Jaz Murphy works weekly with a small group children. All have been identified by both teachers and parents as facing social or emotional challenges. This programme helps the children build the strategies for self-management and resilience necessary to deal with their personal issues.  There is a waiting list to get into the programme and over the past couple of years over 80 children have been involved. We are advised by the school and health experts that the results are amazing and the programme is making a huge difference. This could not be done without the contributions made by our Waiheke community.  Thank you to all of you and we share with great delight that 80 Island youngsters are now hopefully moving on to happier, healthier and more confident teenage years.

We would also like to pay tribute to the wonderful nurses and midwives working on Waiheke Island. They play a huge role in supporting the health needs of our local children from birth through to the end of High School and are frequently responsible for identifying problems through routine early childhood or school health checks. They are also often the first to detect development problems and are increasingly referring families to the Trust for help. It’s very satisfying for everyone when we can provide the means for an early intervention before problems become compounded.
